Sandra Marcus named CFO of Crantel, Inc. Crantel Inc. has announced that it has chosen former Kentoch CFO, Sandra Marcus, to head its revamped financial element starting July 3. Vice-president of public relations, Nick Tucker, said yesterday. "Ms. Marcus has had enormous success turning Kentoch into a highly profitable company, and we look forward to adding Sandra to our troubled company into the premier toy manufacturer of Scotland." "Sandra Marcus has demonstrated her ability time and time again by increasing sales, revenue, and consumership." Tucker went on to say, "We are excited about working with Ms. Marcus and feel confident that she can provide the aid and inspiration needed to turn Crantel into a profitable company again."

Crantel, Inc. has experienced a number of successful years since its inception in 1984. Up until the late 1990s, the toy manufacturer was among the top 5 in all of Europe and had expanded toy lines into Asia and North America. Sales troubles began when a lawsuit emerged from a customer claiming that one of Crantel's most popular toys had nearly killed her 8-year-old son. The suit was settled, and the mother admitted that her son may have caused the accident himself. The public was not forgiving, however, and the company has since been significantly troubled from the negative publicity.

Sandra Marcus was able to bring Kentoch out of financial ruins after a similar public catastrophe in the late 80s and became a highly recognized and respected financial guru. Marcus left Kentoch in 2001 to host her own financial program on the World News Network. After she retired from the program in January, former CFO, John Thompson, retired from Crantel and actively pursued Marcus for the position.

16. According to Mr. Tucker, why has Crantel hired Ms. Marcus?
17. How did Crantel lose its customer base?
18. What did John Thompson do upon retiring?

Gloria Arden [8:20 A.M.] I've been looking over everyone's progress reports on the software project. Based on what I've seen, I don't think we'll be able to meet our scheduled release date.
Isabel Cabrera [8:22 A.M.] You may be right about that. Since Bob and Carol moved over to the new hardware project, we've had some trouble meeting the initial deadlines.
Gordon Brickyard [8:26 A.M.] Couldn't we just reschedule the release? Pushing it back a month ought to give us enough time to finish up.
Joe Freemont [8:28 A.M.] But remember that the product is supposed to be available for the holiday season, which is our peak sales period. If we miss that deadline, we could lose many potential customers.
Gordon Brickyard [8:31 A.M.] My team has a lot of urgent responsibilities, so I think it would be a good idea to hire some independent contractors to help out.
Gloria Arden [8:32 A.M.] What are you thinking?
Gordon Brickyard [8:33 A.M.] Well, they could help my team finish writing the user manual, for one thing. And they could probably handle product testing as well.
Gloria Arden [8:35 A.M.] I see. What's your opinion, Isabel?
Isabel Cabrera [8:37 A.M.] It could end up being expensive, but I like the idea. Our graphic designers could certainly use some outside help, too.
Gloria Arden [8:40 A.M.] Well, it sounds like we should go with Gordon’s idea. I'll also bring it up during the board meeting on Friday to see what they say.

19. What caused a project to fall behind schedule?
20. Why most likely is changing the release date unacceptable?
21. What is suggested about Mr. Brickyard's team?

Eagle Canyon City Park

Over the past month, there has been a sharp increase in reported sightings of raccoons in the open spaces of the park. The park rangers suspect the creatures are attracted by food scraps that are left—whether on purpose or accidentally—by visitors to the park. —[1]—. The city’s public health department does not want to encourage the raccoons to leave the wooded areas of the park as they can be carries of disease and pose a risk to visitors and their pets. —[2]—. With that in mind:

● Please do not leave any garbage in the park—either take it with you when you leave, or place it in the closed garbage bins that are provided throughout the park.

● If you see raccoons, do not approach them or give them food as they are wild animals with sharp claws and can be dangerous when they feel frightened.

—[3]—. Along with this, we will be holding volunteer park cleanups on the last Saturday of each month. Our next one is scheduled for June 27. Anyone interested in taking part should report to the park visitor center to register. —[4]—. All participants will be provided with protective gloves and vests, water, and a light lunch.

25. What will volunteers be given?
26. In which of the positions marked [1], [2], [3], and [4] does the following sentence best belong? "We will accept registration forms up to two days prior to the event."

Proposal for funding of new communications studio at Weston College in Burmingham, Alabama

Background: Weston College has offered matriculating students as well as statewide high school students opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful in a variety of disciplines within the mass communications field for 20 years. With a small communications program of 100 students, Weston is able to provide students with one-on-one attention and instill program participants with a wide spectrum of educational facilities in order to promote a well-rounded student population. The private college receives less than 5% of its annual income from public funds and mostly relies on private endowments for scholarship and facilities.

Proposal Project: The mass communications department, by request of the students, has decided to create a local television station which would provide community members an outlet for public service announcements, calendars and promotion of non-commercial, not-for-profit events. The station would be entirely student-run with the exception of school advisors and mentors.

Needs: To maintain a competitive status within the educational community. Weston College must keep up with technological advancements made in the communications industry. In order to continue to draw in top achieving students, the school should be able to continually provide students with all the educational facilities larger universities are offering without increasing matriculation costs.

Donor Benefits: The Weston College production studio will honor the program's top donors by using their name on the building and they will be recognized during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the time of the studio's grand opening. Other donors will be recognized publicly when the station is up and running.

32. Why does the college want to build this facility?
33. How will donations from individuals be used?
34. What will the college do to thank the highest donors?
35. Who made the proposal for the new center?

Hanlan’s Coffee Company - Ethical Purchasing Policy

At Hanlan’s, we know that our customers like to drink only the finest coffee from around the world. We also recognize that they want to be sure that the people who grow that coffee are treated fairly. Many coffee producers provide their employees with poor working conditions and low pay, which are practices that Hanlan’s does not support. —[1]—.

Coffee companies that buy their stock on the open market never know exactly where it comes from. But at Hanlan’s, we take a different approach. We have exclusive contracts with farms in Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Vietnam. —[2]—. Because of this, we know exactly who is producing our coffee and the conditions in which it is being grown. We appreciate all the hard work of our farmers and ensure that they have acceptable working conditions and wages. But our commitment does’t end there. —[3]—. Hanlan’s pays them an additional 10 percent above current market prices as our way of saying "thanks."

Furthermore, to give even more back to these communities, we have started the Hanlan’s Development Foundation. Each year through this organization, we put five percent of our total corporate profits into building schools, water pumps and purification plants, and health care facilities in the towns and villages near where our coffee is grown. The main goal is to make certain that all our workers’ children are safe, healthy, and have the chance to go to school and receive a full education. —[4]—.

Subject: Meeting
Date: October 6

Dear Ms. Atkins,

I just wanted to confirm the details that were discussed at the marketing meeting you called this morning. Following your instructions, additional funds for market research will be allocated to the only department whose sales performance in September declined. Also, it was agreed that we should continue promoting the categories that showed an increase in sales. As for watches and jewelry, you want us to conduct surveys to learn what specific items customers want most. Since profit margins for those items are high, you indicated that the company may wish to enlarge the selection in that department next year. Please let me know if this covers everything you requested or spoke about at the meeting so that I don't overlook anything. Once I hear from you, I will discuss this with the rest of the marketing staff. We can present a tentative plan when we meet with you again next week.

Fall festival Ends in Disaster.

Winnitoba: Applause turned to upset last Friday when the Winnitoba Symphony held their annual Fall Festival Performance at the Winnitoba Opera House. The 3-day long Fall Festival came to an end with a featured concert, which was attended by just over 300 people. The concert ended with a montage of traditional mid-western music for which the symphony was accompanied by the Winnitoba Men's Choir. Although the choir is currently touring Canada to promote their new CD, they were glad to work with the symphony. The audience did not seem to appreciate the performance, which featured nationally recognized soloist, Donald Pericelli along with violinist, Mark Whitten. Accounts claim that audience members were yelling at the musicians and leaving the Opera House after requesting a refund. To add to the general unhappiness of the audience, an unexpected staging malfunction made the evening even worse. One attendee reported seeing the stage curtain hanging quite loosely throughout the performance. As the symphony finished their traditional music piece, someone on the side of the stage, tripped over the dangling material bringing the entire curtain onto the stage. Several players had their instruments knocked out of their hands and the concert had to end abruptly. Donald Pericelli was injured when a hook holding the curtain up hit him in the head. He is currently recovering at Winnitoba Memorial Hospital.

Winnitoba Times
Local Newsdesk,

Dear Sir,

I am a cellist with the Winnitoba symphony. I was performing with the orchestra at the end of last week's Fall Festival. As a participant in the event, I would like to complain that your coverage of the event was quite unfair. To begin with, our audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy the complete performance, including the traditional music montage at the end of the show. At no time do I recall any audience members yelling towards the stage. I do not know about people requesting refunds, but if there were, I'm sure our performance was not the reason. As for the incident concerning the stage curtain, it did fall but not until the very end of the set and it did not affect the performance in any way. The curtain simply fell to the side of the stage. Unfortunately, the Winnitoba Times has printed quite negative articles about the Winnitoba Symphony in the past. I would like to request that this not become a habit. Please use the correct facts and print a retraction in next week's addition.
Thank you,

Karen Winter

Dear Ms. Flowers,

I am sorry to hear of your inconvenience. Let me correct the situation.

First, our system indicates that you are entitled to the voucher. We normally tell customers that they will get it within four weeks. I apologize if our airline staff failed to convey this information properly at the time your flight was canceled. The voucher has been mailed and should arrive shortly. Second, all of the passengers on your flight were offered a night's stay at an airport hotel. Our policy states that we can reimburse a passenger with exceptional circumstances up to the price of the hotel stay. Your situation qualifies since the car rental amount was less than this cost. To proceed, complete the attached form and mail it to us along with your original receipt.

If I can assist you further, please contact me again. Thank you for being a loyal, valued customer.

Subject: software training

As you know, we have decided to replace our old software with a new program that will facilitate our work better. Although the new software is not technically difficult to use, it is significantly different from our old software. The entire staff will need to be trained to use it. Of course, not everyone can attend a training session together, because we need some staff members to be in the office at all times. The trainer suggests that each person attend one training session and one follow-up session. The sessions will last three to four hours each. The trainer can be here once a week. Please develop a training schedule so that everyone can be trained over the next two months. Thank you.

I have written up a schedule that will facilitate the training process. There will be eight weekly training sessions all together. Re: Credit card use

With Thanksgiving next month, and Christmas also getting closer, we would like you to use the following information to help you advise customers. When customers come to get advice about reducing or avoiding credit card debt, give them a copy of the attached article. Explain to them that they should spend only what they can afford. Help them understand the main reasons for debt. Also, please become familiar with our new interest rates because customers may ask about them.

Reading text 2:

During the holiday season, many Americans find themselves in great financial trouble. Recent studies show that the average American buys many more gifts than he or she can afford. That may help explain why the average American has a debt of $7,000. Many citizens have even larger debts of between $15,000 and $18,000. The use of credit cards is the main source of debt in holiday spending. Financial advisors recommend that consumers only spend as much as they can afford during the holiday season to avoid financial difficulties in the following months. Interest can significantly increase the final costs. Please ask one of our advisors for a list of current interest rates.
