Lester Beebe Hits Stage in South Bend

A musical version of Michelle Gable's novel The Triumph of Lester Beebe is set to premiere next month on May 22. -[1]-. Set in South Bend, the show is the story of a teenage boy who is the son of an automobile factory worker in the 1960s. The book became a favorite of young adult readers when it was first printed in 1968. -[2]-.

Producers Todd Carlisle and Emma Wright were not even born when the book was first released but say they identified with Lester Beebe's adolescent struggles when first reading the story. "Lester Beebe isn't just a teenager from South Bend," says Carlisle, "he could be a young person from anywhere." In addition to being the show's producers, Carlisle and Wright manage the Eden Playhouse in South Bend. -[3]-. In the highly competitive world of retail sales, it's difficult for inexperienced entrepreneurs to turn a profit when the cost of renting a store or shop is so high. But regional retailers don't need to look any further now than the Bradford Retail Cooperative building, opening on March 1. -[1]-.

The cooperative is located in the building formerly occupied by the Mega-B-Mart superstore on the outskirts of Bradford City. In partnership with the city government, Phoenix-Star Properties has updated the structure and renovated it to house 160 small retail booths. Director of Phoenix-Star, Brenda Nixon, said, "the old structure was an eyesore ever since the store it once held went bankrupt. -[2]-. Through a very small investment, we have been able to revitalize the building into a location that is not only useful to the community but will help improve local economic conditions as well."

Aurora's First Job Fair

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce will conduct the first Aurora Job Fair on March 29, from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Aurora City Arena. Coordinator Alex McDade explained that the fair was organized in response to calls from Mayor Owen Brownstein, who has asked the business community to help the city address issues with unemployment. Fifty companies are expected to participate.

Employers wishing to secure a regular-sized table at the event will be charged $150, while double-sized tables cost $250. However, those who register before February 28 may reserve a regular table for just $130. For registration, contact Liz Perry at lizperry@lightlife.com. Job seekers do not need to register in advance and will be admitted for free.
