Think Like a Champion
By Dennis Flatmeyer

What secret power do professional athletes and Olympians possess that enables them to perform under pressure? Well, the answer, according to psychologists and athletic trainers, is in the brain.
For years, athletes and coaches alike believed that athletic skill and physical training were the two most important factors determining competitive success.
Recent evidence, however, suggests that mental training is actually more critical than athletic ability. Thus, while you may not have been born a champion golfer, you can certainly train yourself to become one by employing the proper mental training.
Take for example, the four-time Olympic gold medal winner in the 200 meter dash, Paul Fisher. Paul was born with a rare neuromuscular disease that prevented him from growing normally. He spent the first five years of his life in a hospital bed, and doctors told his parents that he would probably have to use a wheelchair all his life. Then, in 1988, while watching the Seoul Olympics from his hospital bed, Paul decided that he would one day be an Olympic runner.
Twelve years later, in Sydney, Paul Fisher was standing on the Olympic podium, wearing a gold medal around his neck. When asked about his incredible victory, Paul said, "It was easy, once I made up my mind to do it."
At Haverford University, psychologists monitored ten athletes who were each given the exact same physical training schedule. However, five athletes were also given a mental training schedule, where they practiced meditating and using positive thinking techniques. What did the University discover? The five athletes who prepared mentally and physically performed nearly seventy percent better than the other five athletes!

18. What does the article mention about athletic performance?
19. What is NOT true about Paul Fisher?
20. What did Haverford University do for their research?

To: Sarah Lim <s.lim@greenfieldtravel.com>
From: Mark Chen <m.chen@greenfieldtravel.com>
Subject: Sales meeting follow-up
Date: January 4

Hi Sarah,

I'm writing to confirm the action items from the sales meeting you led this morning. As discussed, we'll allocate extra customer service resources to the only region that experienced a drop in December bookings. We'll also continue promoting the destinations that showed growth in our summary. Regarding ski packages, you requested that we "arrange a vendor meeting to expand hotel options for ski packages" because "margins are high" on those products, and the company may want to increase the selection next season. Please tell me if I missed anything. Once you confirm, I will coordinate with the service and sales teams so we "can present a tentative plan when we meet with you again next week."

Thanks,

Mark Chen

Regional sales manager

LEAF & LETTER - STAFF MEMO

Team, thank you for a busy first weekend at Platform 3. A few problems need immediate correction.

First, some staff handed out the "First Chapter" sampler to customers who did not meet the $25 purchase requirement. Remember the promotion: "free with purchases over $25 through Sept 12." Second, there have been instances where the Leaf Club discount was applied to clearance items — that is not allowed. Policy: "Leaf Club 10% applies to regular-priced items only."

Third, verification for pre-orders: all pre-orders "must show order confirmation and government ID." Fourth, vouchers: "vouchers are given for purchases over $40." Please give eligible customers a voucher and record the voucher number in the log. Finally, exchanges for non-perishables are accepted within 24 hours with the original receipt.
