Gardenville to Resurrect Jefferson Cinema

Gardenville City Council members voted on Thursday to proceed with the restructuring and renovation of the old Jefferson Cinema on Jorgensen Street. The structure, built in the late 1920s, has sat vacant since it shut down in the 1980s. The opening of two multiplex theater complexes in Gardenville drove the one-screen cinema out of business.

Upon recommendation of the Gardenville Arts Council (GAC) and the Gardenville History Society, the city will invest a sum of $2.3 million in the building. The updated facility will be used as a venue for live theatrical performances and will be renamed The Jefferson Playhouse. Local theater group Flora-Lane Community Players will use the building for all its rehearsals and shows. Likewise, the venue will also be a space for visiting acts, performers, and theatrical groups. GAC President Marvin Lee said in a telephone interview "we are thrilled that the council approved the project unanimously. —[1]—. First, it will help preserve our local heritage and history, and it will also provide our community’s theater club with a more appropriate home". —[2]—. Flora-Lane Community Players currently practices and holds performances at the Carter Neighborhood Youth Center’s auditorium. —[3]—. However, with a seating capacity of only 100 audience members, the group’s growingly popular shows require a larger venue. —[4]—.

The project is scheduled to begin on June 8 and will last for approximately four months.

Bluecoats Look to a Brighter Future

Last night the management of the Kansas City Bluecoats finally made the long-expected announcement that the team will be moving into a new stadium in a suburb just within the city limits of Kansas City. -[1]-.

The Bluecoats were one of the top teams in American football two decades ago, winning the national championship once and making it to the final game on another occasion. -[2]-. But recent years have been more difficult, with disappointing placements in the league and a dwindling fan base that has been attracted to other more successful sports teams in the region.

Moving will allow for cheaper ticket prices, more parking spaces, and easier access from other areas. -[3]-. As for the team, it will get to train using state-of-the-art facilities. Work will begin on the currently unnamed new stadium this month and is expected to be finished within two years.

Kansas City mayor Lester Hickman celebrated the team's move, saying, "This is great news for the team, and we look forward to helping the Bluecoats rise back up to their previous levels of success." -[4]-.

Reality television shows are becoming increasingly poplar around the United States. One recent show, Wannabe, depicts a group of five men and five women who live in the same house for several months without contact with the rest of the world. Each week the participants take singing lessons and perform their songs for the audience and the judges. Also, every weekend one participant must leave the program, as they are voted off the show either because of lack of singing talent or because the other participants do not like living with them. The television audience participates in the voting process, and an average of two million votes per week are entered by viewers, either by phone or Internet. The final two remaining "Wannabes" earn a recording contract with a famous company.

Symposium to Stress Importance of Contemporary Art.
April 13-16

The Braker University art department is pleased to announce its annual Art Symposium schedule. This year, guest lecturers will focus on the significance of contemporary art in urban design. The four-day symposium will feature both artists and urban developers from around North America. The focal point of the event is the impact of art within our community, the trend of developers to include contemporary art in their community design along with facts and figures regarding community pride among residents with and without featured artwork. Specifics of each lecture or event can be obtained by looking at the Braker University Web site, www.Braker.edu/art/symposium. All lectures and presentations will be held by the O.R. Morrisey Center at the North entrance of the University from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. each day.
