Italian Festival a Big Success

The Smallvilee Department of Transportation (SDT) announced that it will begin construction on a new bus lane downtown. The construction is scheduled to begin at the end of July, a city official said. The new bus lane will provide direct service to the main financial district, and will replace bus lines 3 and 4. Studies have been conducted on traffic patterns and it is expected that the new service will reduce commuting time by 25 percent. Crane Construction has been contracted to build the new lane. Unfortunately, Main St. will be closed from July 22nd to August 30th, while the construction is taking place. The SDT has asked all commuters who drive to work to take 122 Avenue instead of Main Street.

PORTABLE DATA STORAGE DEVICES

Please be advised that, effective immediately, personal data storage devices, such as key drives and portable hard drives, will not be allowed on company premises. Because they pose too much of a security risk, personnel are asked to refrain from bringing such devices to the office. Employees who require a means of mass storage for bringing work home with them are asked to fill out a requisition form and submit it to their manager for approval. Those with appropriate security clearance will be issued a special company portable hard drive. This will be checked by security and scanned for sensitive data or potential security risks (viruses or other malicious software) upon entering and leaving the building. Lester Beebe Hits Stage in South Bend

A musical version of Michelle Gable's novel The Triumph of Lester Beebe is set to premiere next month on May 22. -[1]-. Set in South Bend, the show is the story of a teenage boy who is the son of an automobile factory worker in the 1960s. The book became a favorite of young adult readers when it was first printed in 1968. -[2]-.

Producers Todd Carlisle and Emma Wright were not even born when the book was first released but say they identified with Lester Beebe's adolescent struggles when first reading the story. "Lester Beebe isn't just a teenager from South Bend," says Carlisle, "he could be a young person from anywhere." In addition to being the show's producers, Carlisle and Wright manage the Eden Playhouse in South Bend. -[3]-. According to Wright, the area is not well-known for musical productions, but she hopes The Triumph of Lester Beebe will change that. "Todd and I are also counting on local interest to help in building an audience for the show," she said.

Playing the role of Beebe is actor Henry Thomas. Veteran performer Neil Chandler plays his father, while the roles of Beebe's sisters, Mandy and Corinne, will be realized by Stephanie O'Connor and Audrey Blanco. Following the run in South Bend, Carlisle and Wright will take the show to New York in August for its Broadway debut. -[4]-. NEW YORK - Synchia Enterprises, Inc. announced Monday that it has named Gary Myers as its new chief financial officer. Myers, formerly executive vice president and CFO at LoveJoy Co., will begin his new position June 12th. He will report directly to the Synchia Chairman and chief executive, Michael Spooner.

Myers, 52, replaces Cathy Fines, who is moving over to run Synchia's fledgling on-line music sales operation. There had been talk of moving Fines out of the CFO position for weeks, as Synchia's earnings came in below target and the company's stock faltered.

"Gary has a track record of helping companies to generate greater value, and his expertise in financial management, in addition to his significant experience in the consumer business, will boost our growth across the company," Spooner said in a written statement.

Visitors and tour groups are welcome to view Bennett House from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 A.M. until 5 P.M. Groups of 10 or more are asked to make reservations a day in advance. Those who fail to do so may face significant waiting times. Admission is free, but cash boxes are located at the entrance and gift shop, where donations are gratefully accepted.

Bennett House can also arrange guided visits for students or tour groups for a flat fee of $25. -[1]-. All guests will receive informational brochures, which include history and facts about the Victorian-era home and the art and furniture contained in the rooms. -[2]-. The brochures contain pictures and short biographies of the house's former inhabitants as well. -[3]-.

Jason Avery has been a professional comedian for over fifteen years. As he says, "It's not easy to make people laugh every night. As a comedian, you have to keep inventing new jokes all the time to keep the public happy." Obviously, Mr. Avery has been very successful doing this. He has appeared on many popular television shows and has been a guest of the President at special ceremonies. Avery's most recent works, in addition to television shows, have been several popular movies and cable broadcast comedy programs. He also frequently donates his time to charity events to help raise money for children in need. The most rewarding part of his job, Avery says, is to see people smile. As Avery says, "It's a hard job, but someone has to do it!"

A Very Fruity Idea

Our cities are filled with trees, and the vast majority of those trees produce edible fruits. -[1]-. But with no one to collect and process them, most simply fall to the ground and rot, wasting a potentially excellent source of nutrition.

One new organization wants to change that. -[2]-. Fresh From The Tree is a non-profit group that aims to collect as much fruit as possible from the city's trees, and then make it into delicious snacks that can be sold at low prices to local residents.

"We have been doing a survey of the locations of all the fruit trees in town," says co-founder Michaela Anderson. "Once we have identified a promising tree, we contact the homeowners and ask if we can pick the fruit for them. -[3]-. They usually don’t have time to manage it themselves."

After the volunteers collect the fruit, they give half of it to the owners of the residence, and keep the other half to turn into fruit pies, jams, sorbets, and other tasty but healthy desserts. The group only has a handful of volunteers at the moment but are hoping to recruit more in the coming months. -[4]-. They are also negotiating with the city to collect fruit from trees on government property.

The meeting with Gilman Electronics was rescheduled from Friday, April 22, to Monday, May 25. I received an e-mail from their CEO, Robert Towney, informing me that Gilman Electronics is not ready to introduce the new computers due to production delays. Apparently, technicians discovered a serious defect in one of the microchips and consequently all of the computers have to be re-evaluated. Therefore, we have about a month to work on the advertising campaign. I recommend that we meet early next week - perhaps Monday or Wednesday - to discuss the current ad campaign and determine whether or not we want to change it now that we have some extra time. Please e-mail me by 4 p.m. today with your comments or suggestions about the Gilman account. As you know, Gilman is our biggest client so it is critical that we provide the best service possible.

Tea Tree Eco-Resorts Set to Open in Mexico by Year's End

International hotel chain Tea Tree Eco-Resorts is in the final stages of building a 22-acre resort on Mexico's Mayan Riviera. The first visitors are expected to arrive by December 21. Like other Tea Tree Eco-Resorts in the Philippines, and Greece, the new hotel will be as eco-friendly as possible. "We have solar panels generating electricity and heating the water, for instance. Furthermore, none of the local farmers from whom we source our ingredients for regional specialties, such as pork wrapped in banana leaves and citrus-marinated chicken soup, use any chemical pesticides at all," said general manager Jose Perez. The plan is for the facilities to be built around naturally growing trees and plant life, with structures blending in with the jungle. My wife and I were interested in a sailboat tour but were informed that the boat only held 24 passengers and was full. So, we inquired about a trip to the Mayan city, but it was also completely booked. Thankfully, we managed to go on the January 19 outing and enjoyed it very much. I recommend that more seats be available for trips, especially during high tourist season.
