Volunteers Wanted!

CBG Steel is sponsoring the third annual Race for the Children, a ten kilometer run that raises money for Mercy Children's Hospital, located near the company's main building. The race will be held on Saturday, November 23, at 3:00 p.m. at the Headman Pavilion. The Planning Committee is looking for volunteers (who are NOT running in the race) to work at the drinking stations. The job is very easy, and only requires two to three hours of your time. You should arrive around 1:00 p.m. to set up the drinking station for the race, which involves organizing cups, water, juice, and snacks for the runners. Then, you will be responsible for handing out beverages and snacks to racers as they run by. After the race finishes, there will be an awards ceremony and a brief speech by CBG president, Walter Headman, followed by a small celebratory dinner for everyone. All volunteers will receive a free meal pass. For anyone interested in volunteering, there will be a brief meeting on Thursday, November 15, at 12:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in Room #203. Lunch will be provided.

Latino History Month Poetry and Music

Share the Latino-American experience with renowned poet German Roberto in Highland Park. This special event has been prepared to bring insights into Latino literary works. Not only can you enjoy popular modern poetry reading, but you can also interact with Mr. Roberto and the other participants in the event.

Also, get ready for an exciting guitar performance by a live band and the following sing-a-long session. This is a part of the Highland Park's Latino History Month programs. Admission's free. Lester Beebe Hits Stage in South Bend

A musical version of Michelle Gable's novel The Triumph of Lester Beebe is set to premiere next month on May 22. -[1]-. Set in South Bend, the show is the story of a teenage boy who is the son of an automobile factory worker in the 1960s. The book became a favorite of young adult readers when it was first printed in 1968. -[2]-.

Producers Todd Carlisle and Emma Wright were not even born when the book was first released but say they identified with Lester Beebe's adolescent struggles when first reading the story. "Lester Beebe isn't just a teenager from South Bend," says Carlisle, "he could be a young person from anywhere." In addition to being the show's producers, Carlisle and Wright manage the Eden Playhouse in South Bend. -[3]-. According to Wright, the area is not well-known for musical productions, but she hopes The Triumph of Lester Beebe will change that. "Todd and I are also counting on local interest to help in building an audience for the show," she said.

Playing the role of Beebe is actor Henry Thomas. Veteran performer Neil Chandler plays his father, while the roles of Beebe's sisters, Mandy and Corinne, will be realized by Stephanie O'Connor and Audrey Blanco. Following the run in South Bend, Carlisle and Wright will take the show to New York in August for its Broadway debut. -[4]-. Gordon Institute Publishes Study on Americans' Eating and Exercise Habits

In its last survey conducted a decade ago, the Gordon Institute found that many Americans were not as active as they should be and often ate excessively. Now, the Atlanta-based nonprofit organization has released the comprehensive results of a new survey on the same topic.

According to the survey, 45 percent of Americans exercise once a week for 30 minutes a day or more. An additional 25 percent exercise three times a week for 30 minutes a day or more, and a further 10 percent exercise at least 30 minutes every day of the week. -[1]-.

Of the Americans who do exercise, 65 percent say they jog slowly, 25 percent say they lift weights, and the remaining 10 percent say they walk long distances or perform other activities. -[2]-. About 40 percent of this group say they don't make any effort to regulate their food intake, while about 60 percent say they strive to eat healthily at least some of the time. -[3]-.

These results make for an interesting comparison to a similar survey the Gordon Institute published 20 years ago. In that survey, only 23 percent of Americans said they exercised at least once a week. Furthermore, the percentage of those monitoring their food intake and endeavoring to make smart food choices has risen 11 percent. -[4]-.
