Proposal for funding of new communications studio at Weston College in Burmingham, Alabama

Background: Weston College has offered matriculating students as well as statewide high school students opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful in a variety of disciplines within the mass communications field for 20 years. With a small communications program of 100 students, Weston is able to provide students with one-on-one attention and instill program participants with a wide spectrum of educational facilities in order to promote a well-rounded student population. The private college receives less than 5% of its annual income from public funds and mostly relies on private endowments for scholarship and facilities.

Proposal Project: The mass communications department, by request of the students, has decided to create a local television station which would provide community members an outlet for public service announcements, calendars and promotion of non-commercial, not-for-profit events. The station would be entirely student-run with the exception of school advisors and mentors.

Needs: To maintain a competitive status within the educational community. Weston College must keep up with technological advancements made in the communications industry. In order to continue to draw in top achieving students, the school should be able to continually provide students with all the educational facilities larger universities are offering without increasing matriculation costs.

Donor Benefits: The Weston College production studio will honor the program's top donors by using their name on the building and they will be recognized during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the time of the studio's grand opening. Other donors will be recognized publicly when the station is up and running.

15. Why does the college want to build this facility?
16. How will donations from individuals be used?
17. What will the college do to thank the highest donors?
18. Who made the proposal for the new center?

Fumiko Nakamura [10:50 A.M.]
Philip, I'm about to board my flight and should arrive in Boston this afternoon. How's everything going?

Philip Akkarat [10:55 A.M.]
OK for the most part. However, a few system errors occurred in the new computer servers we're using to update the Web site. I called a technician, and he came in this morning at about 8:00.

Fumiko Nakamura [10:58 A.M.]
Was he able to fix the problem?

Philip Akkarat [10:59 A.M.]
He said the issue was more complicated than he first thought. He had another job at 10:00 A.M., so he said he'd be back at 2:00 P.M. to finish up.

Fumiko Nakamura [11:02 A.M.]
Hmm, but those updates need to be done by 4:00 P.M. Why don't you ask the staff to use the old servers for now?

Philip Akkarat [11:03 A.M.]
All right. That will take longer, so we should probably start now in order to finish in time.

Fumiko Nakamura [11:05 A.M.]
Good. I'll see you in a few hours.

19. When will the technician come to complete a repair?
20. At 11:03 A.M., what does Mr. Akkarat most likely mean when he writes, "That will take longer"?

Jacob, there have been some changes. Could you stop for some supplies on your way to work?

Jacob Brosky 11:04 A.M.
Oh, sure thing. But I thought that we got everything yesterday.

Nicky Candela 11:07 A.M.
I just got a call from Ms. Arden's wedding planner. She wants to add 40 cupcakes to her order. I've already put them in the oven, but we're all out of decorative silver beads. Also, we need more yellow icing to mix the right colors.

Jacob Brosky 11:08 A.M.
OK, so we need at least two bags of silver beads and four tubes of yellow icing, I'm guessing.

Nicky Candela 11:10 A.M.
Exactly. We'll finish that this morning and then begin work on the food items for Mr. and Mrs. Morton's anniversary party.

Helen Moon 2:20 P.M.
Sue, I was going over the checklist for the trade show. Have you had a chance to pick up those supplies yet?

Sue Sloane 2:24 P.M.
Actually, I found most of what we need in the supply room. The rest I will get on my way to the convention center tomorrow.

Helen Moon 2:25 P.M.
That's perfect. Could you see if there are any clipboards in the supply room? If not, can you also buy some on your way? We need two to hold questionnaires and two more for sign-up sheets for new customers.

Sue Sloane 2:27 P.M.
Not a problem. Anything else you need? Has anyone picked up our pamphlets from the print shop yet? I can get them if nobody has done that.

Helen Moon 2:28 P.M.
I was supposed to do it. I'd be grateful if you could do it.

Sue Sloane 2:29 P.M.
It isn't any trouble. The print shop is nearby Coulier Office Supplies, and that's where I'm getting the rest of the supplies. I'll bring them early so you can prepare to hand them out to participants as soon as the trade show opens. I'll be at the convention center for set-up by three o'clock.

26. At 2:29 P.M., what does Ms. Sloane mean when she writes, "It isn't any trouble"?

Health Note March

The Truth About Supplements? (continued from page 19)
So, ideally, maintaining a varied diet is enough to satisfy the nutritional requirements of adults aged 65 and older. However, some seniors may find this difficult to do, as they lack time and find preparing nutritious meals to be too challenging. In such cases, many doctors agree that taking vitamins and other supplements may be helpful. Even so, physicians believe that these supplements should be carefully regulated so as not to cause unintended harm. According to a controlled study1 by the Research Institute for Aging, some vitamins and minerals can be toxic when ingested in large amounts. For this reason, getting the advice of a trusted and qualified physician before beginning a vitamin regimen is recommended.

1-Health Note was granted advance access to the study, which will soon be available for publication.
