Line Two Reopens

Urbania's subway line number two opened again for full service on Tuesday. An electrical malfunction caused a blackout in three of the line's stations over the weekend. Operator of the line, Cobain Transport, closed the line on Saturday morning to repair the problem. Cobain's public relations officer, Courtney Smith, stated that engineers were able to make repairs and restore power to all the stations. However, electricians were not able to determine what caused the malfunction in the first place. Smith said that one possibility is water leakage damaging some of the system's power circuits. Engineers and electrical experts will continue to monitor the electrical system, but do not expect that there will be any further problem. On behalf of Cobain Transport, Smith apologized for any inconvenience caused by the closure.

17. When did the subway resume regular service?
18. According to the article, what possibly caused the electrical problem?
19. Who does Courtney Smith work for?

Gary Perkins [1:25 P.M.]
Allie, when is your vacation to Cancun? Will you still be out of town on the 18th?

Allie Chen [1:27 P.M.]
Yes, I'll be gone for four days from the 16th to the 19th. Is something the matter?

Gary Perkins [1:28 P.M.]
We have a speaker coming to give a lecture here on the 18th, and I'm checking to see who can help out given that it's a Sunday.

Gary Perkins [1:29 P.M.]
So far, I've already recruited enough volunteers to handle the banquet and the decorations. I'll be picking up the speaker myself, so we just need people to help set up the stage.

Allie Chen [1:29 P.M.]
I see. I'm sorry I can't lend a hand.

Gary Perkins [1:31 P.M.]
No worries. There are still plenty of people I can ask. Someone's bound to be free.

Allie Chen [1:34 P.M.]
If I remember correctly, Ms. Farley should be back from her vacation on the 13th.

Gary Perkins [1:35 P.M.]
Is that so? I'll message her later. Thanks, Allie.

Deloit Industries, a leading producer of construction equipment, plans to open another factory in 2007. The new factory will be built in Rayong, Thailand, where a number of other large-scale manufacturing companies are located.

The company's decision was criticized by many local officials, who claim that Deloit Industries plans to exploit local laborers. In the last decade, many companies have migrated to Thailand because the country's average wages are significantly less than those in North America and Europe. By operating in Thailand, companies are able to decrease their annual expenditures and increase profitability.

Unfortunately, these profits do not always benefit the local communities. According to a company spokesman, however, Deloit Industries will implement a couple of strategies that will benefit the local laborers and their families. Among these "positive plans" are providing health insurance for employees and their families, and giving academic scholarships to employees' children.

The company has implemented similar strategies for employees working at its mines in South Africa, processing plants in the Philippines, and packaging faciities in Brazil. In each place, the company has attempted to hire local workers and integrate itself into the local community. In July, the company hosted a charity event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to raise money for local schools.

30. According to the article, why has Deloit Industries' decision been criticized?
31. What does Deloit Industries plan to do at the facility in Rayong?
32. What is NOT mentioned as another one of Deloit Industries' businesses?

From: Fionnula O'Dell
Subject: Website design

We are currently working on the content and design for our branch's website here in Dublin. I noticed the wonderful layout of your site for Glasgow and saw the name Evelyn Marlinton listed as the designer. Everything on your site seemed very functional, easy to use and attractive, and I'm interested in contacting Ms. Marlinton about working with our branch. I was wondering if you could give me her phone number or e-mail address so I can get in touch with her.

We do have some ideas for the website already, and I'd like to get her opinion on them. I will be visiting Glasgow on Thursday for the sales conference, so maybe we could schedule a brief meeting between the three of us. I'm sure any advice you might have for me would also be useful. Let me know when you might be available. And if you could forward me some information about Ms. Marlinton, I will contact her as well.

Thanks for your help!

Subject: Bernardo Mall Parking
ATTACHMENT: Parking Receipt (215117648)

To Whom It May Concern,

Yesterday, my son and I visited the Bernardo Mall and had a meal at Chips and Tacos, the restaurant located next to the mall. Upon leaving the mall, I was charged a fee of $5.73 for parking. I had not expected this as I think I had been informed that those who spend more than $20 will be exempt from paying the parking fee. Even though I did not buy anything at the mall, I spent far more than $30 at the restaurant. I was too busy to explain everything to the employee at Gate #5 at the time, but I hope I can be refunded for this error.

Thank you,

Charles Arana
