Line Two Reopens

Urbania's subway line number two opened again for full service on Tuesday. An electrical malfunction caused a blackout in three of the line's stations over the weekend. Operator of the line, Cobain Transport, closed the line on Saturday morning to repair the problem. Cobain's public relations officer, Courtney Smith, stated that engineers were able to make repairs and restore power to all the stations. However, electricians were not able to determine what caused the malfunction in the first place. Smith said that one possibility is water leakage damaging some of the system's power circuits. Engineers and electrical experts will continue to monitor the electrical system, but do not expect that there will be any further problem. On behalf of Cobain Transport, Smith apologized for any inconvenience caused by the closure.

Deloit Industries, a leading producer of construction equipment, plans to open another factory in 2007. The new factory will be built in Rayong, Thailand, where a number of other large-scale manufacturing companies are located.

The company's decision was criticized by many local officials, who claim that Deloit Industries plans to exploit local laborers. In the last decade, many companies have migrated to Thailand because the country's average wages are significantly less than those in North America and Europe. By operating in Thailand, companies are able to decrease their annual expenditures and increase profitability.

Unfortunately, these profits do not always benefit the local communities. According to a company spokesman, however, Deloit Industries will implement a couple of strategies that will benefit the local laborers and their families. Among these "positive plans" are providing health insurance for employees and their families, and giving academic scholarships to employees' children.

The company has implemented similar strategies for employees working at its mines in South Africa, processing plants in the Philippines, and packaging faciities in Brazil. In each place, the company has attempted to hire local workers and integrate itself into the local community. In July, the company hosted a charity event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to raise money for local schools.

Opening Ceremony for New Research Wing

Countydale Hospital is proud to announce that construction on the new 20 million dollar research wing has been completed. To celebrate the occasion, the hospital has decided to hold a special ceremony on Saturday, May 14, at 4 pm. All hospital staff, patients, and city residents are welcome to attend. Below is a basic overview of the schedule of events:

4:00 p.m. - James Rosenthal, Director of Countydale Hospital, will give an introductory speech.

5:00 p.m. - Dr. Merriam Way will discuss the research work that will take place in the new wing.

6:00 p.m. - Gary Paulson Jr., President of Wilson Pharmaceuticals, will talk about his 15 million-dollar contribution to the new wing.

7:00 p.m. - The children of City Elementary School will sing a few songs.

7:30 p.m. - Dr. Steven Fellows, Countydale Chief of Surgery, will cut the ribbon and open the doors.

8:00 p.m. - Patients and staff will be invited to enjoy cake and refreshments in the reception area of the new Paulson Research Wing.

Travel and Hospitality Convention

The 10th annual North American Travel and Hospitality Convention will be held this year from April 5 to April 9. The Chateau Moraine Convention Center located in Banff, Alberta will play host to the convention and events this year. To ensure a pleasant and safe experience for all visitors, the Bernardo Mall’s parking policy must be strictly abided by and will be enforced at all times. Please read the following rules and instructions carefully:

• All parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. Park in designated spaces only. The Wells Zone, the parking space for large vehicles, such as trucks, buses, or vans, is located next to Carpe Diem, a toy store. All other types of vehicles should be parked in the Pedro Zone, located near the west wing of the mall.

• Parking is complimentary for the first half an hour for all visitors. Afterward, a rate of $2 per hour will apply. Visitors who spend more than $20 at the Bernardo Mall will have their parking fee waived. The receipts must be shown at each gate when leaving. Although we share parking spaces with several restaurants near the Bernardo Mall, restaurant receipts are not accepted.

• Parking is available during the Bernardo Mall’s operating hours, 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., throughout the year.

Yesterday, my son and I visited the Bernardo Mall and had a meal at Chips and Tacos, the restaurant located next to the mall. Upon leaving the mall, I was charged a fee of $5.73 for parking. I had not expected this as I think I had been informed that those who spend more than $20 will be exempt from paying the parking fee. Even though I did not buy anything at the mall, I spent far more than $30 at the restaurant. I was too busy to explain everything to the employee at Gate #5 at the time, but I hope I can be refunded for this error.
